A gutsy century by Greg Blewett put South Australia in a comfortable position on the opening day of the Pura Cup cricket match against Victoria at Adelaide Oval.

At the close of play, the Redbacks were 4-261 with Jeff Vaughan not out 15 and Chris Davies on 21.

Blewett battled for more than four hours in stifling heat to reach 117 before Victorian paceman Mathew Inness struck in the third over of the new ball to have him caught by Jason Arnberger late in the final session.

SA opener David Fitzgerald reached his half century before he was caught by Ian Harvey off the bowling of John Davison.

Davison also claimed the crucial wicket of SA captain Darren Lehmann, caught by Arnberger for 21.

Shane Deitz was the first man out, caught behind by Peter Roach off Harvey for 25.

Davison finished with 2-64 from 23 overs.
